ZECO Energy's Marshall Technology Enhances Compliance with Victoria's Emergency Backstop Mechanism

Melbourne, Australia – February 6, 2025 – ZECO Energy is proud to confirm that its innovative Marshall technology is effectively addressing challenges associated with Victoria's Emergency Backstop Mechanism for solar systems for several major inverter brands. By facilitating seamless communication between inverters and Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs), Marshall ensures compliance and is providing a solution for the industry in this time of trouble with a >98 per cent success rate.

Victoria's Emergency Backstop Mechanism, introduced in stages starting October 2023, mandates that new, upgraded, and replacement rooftop solar systems be capable of remote modulation or shutdown during grid emergencies. This requirement aims to prevent blackouts by managing excess solar exports. However, the industry is facing difficulties in achieving the necessary communication between inverters and DNSPs, posing compliance challenges for system owners and installers. A recent emergency meeting called by the Smart Energy Council highlighted how serious these concerns are.

The Marshall family consists of Marshall Lite, Blackbox and Ultra, all with Dynamic Export capabilities for various solutions. Marshall is a certified Australian Made hardware and software solution provides a streamlined, intelligent solution for homes, businesses, and other environments. Connected to a secure digital platform, Marshall integrates a wide range of energy devices, enabling remote configuration and control to ensure optimal system performance.

Marshall is compatible with Inverters produced by Fronius, SolarEdge, SMA, QCells, Delta and is closing in on integration with SunGrow. See the full list below.

With it’s Dynamic Export Capabilities, Marshall boasts a >98 per cent success rate when integrating our gateway products with Jemena, AusNet and UE/CitiPower/PowerCor’s production servers, an industry leading figure fighting back against the backlog of Solar Installation issues.

Ranjeet Malewar, Technical Engineer – Marshall, said: “We maintain a long term communication protocols with DNSPs across the country as an Original Equipment Manufacturer and are proud that the investment in our technology is bringing about real world benefits for the broader industry. While DNSP servers are constantly updating and changing, our team of engineers are working hard to make sure our solution is always compatible and we are yet to fail a Commission test with the relevant DNSPs.”

With a simplified commissioning process and real-time remote diagnostics and configuration, Marshall reduces the need for on-site visits after installation, making energy management more efficient and reliable. By offering seamless control and enhanced connectivity, Marshall supports a smarter, more responsive approach to powering modern energy systems.

By bridging the communication gap between inverters and DNSPs, Marshall not only ensures adherence to regulatory requirements but also contributes to the overall stability and reliability of Victoria's power grid.
